View Full Version : Memories of classic Martin Molloy sketches

It's good to have these memories since Mick and Tony have had a massive falling out, and it could well be a while before they speak to one another again.
Remember these sketches from Martin Molloy?
I think one of these was on The Brown Album. I'll have to borrow my brother's copy and check.
During the first year of Martin Molloy, there were sketches called (I think) The Money Show, which was a take off of the AFL Footy Show. Panellists talked about money and economic issues, but with Footy Show style banter. They sounded like footballers instead of economists.
The compere of The Money Show (based on Eddie McGuire), would bounce remarks off a regular called ‘Smacker’ McDougall (based on Sam Newman).
‘Smacker’ McDougall made remarks like “If they had any more frozen assets, they’d be lonely.”
and
“I reckon that interest rate is a bit of a cretin.”
The replies from the host were ‘I’m not touching that”, and “I’m not letting that one go through to the keeper!”
Baywatch with Shakespearian dialogue.
For example; “Hark! Do I spy a fair maiden in distress among the swirling oceans?”
Another sketch;
Tony entered a cave and discovered a chest.
When he opened the chest, there was a sound effect of rushing wind, and the music score from the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when the Ark of the Covenant is opened begins to play as the theme song from The Nanny is heard inside the chest.
This carries on as Tony Martin says “No, no. Make it stop!”:-D
Comedians seem to be a sensitive bunch, but the journalist in me thinks that there is more to Mick and Tone's rift than was reported in the press.
Who knows?

One of the many, many bits of Martin / Molloy I wish I could hear again was the segement where Mick read out David Copperfield's press release, only replacing the word 'magician' with 'poof' (or somesuch - that's why I need to hear it again). And there were an awful lot of references to what a great magician Copperfield was in that press release.

Tony Martin once did a sketch where John Howard appeared on Neighbours. The premise was that someone in the federal government had the idea of using soapie storylines as a way of promoting government policies to the public, such as welfare reform. In Tony's words, leading Australia forward with a bold vision of yesteryear.
John Howard arrives at the Lassiter's cafe, orders a Chiko Roll and a lime spider, and sits down to lunch with Toadie. "Have you heard about the Common Youth Allowance?" That's all I remember, I'm afraid.

An addendum to my previous posting on this topic..
I'm sure that there was another sketch about the APEC summit. Bill Clinton and John Howard (both played by Tony) went to McDonald's for lunch.
John Howard ordered a Junior Burger, a small lemonade and a box of McDonald land cookies.
A restaurant called Testy Pete's.
To get an idea of how this sketch worked, just think of all the rules about good customer service, and reverse them.
Treat customers like even their smallest, most simple request is an inconvenience.
For example, when a customer places their order with the waiter, they are really testy, and reply, "Oh, I suppose so!!"
Just to show that I'm not totally biased in favour of Tony's work on Martin Molloy, I enjoyed most of Mick's too.
Remember the character Haughty Mick?
Mick's mother's day sketch where Mick comes home, and dumps a bucket of KFC in front of his Mum for her special Mother's Day tea?
I think this began with Mick coming home, and complaining about the meal he was served by his mother.
"What is this? (Spit, spit, spit) I come home after a hard day at the pinny parlour, and you expect me to eat this?!"
Mick mentions in the sketch that Mother's Day is a day when one shows how much they appreciate their mother, and they do things that their Mother will enjoy.
He then took her out to wrestling when she had thought she was being taken to see Beauty and the Beast. Mick's poor Mum sits there while Mick shouts, "Go on, kick him in the head!"

one of my all time favourite Mick sketches was 'Fully grown baby'.
Funniest stuff ever!!! (and many years before the Waylans film 'Little Man' came out)
------
On the 3rd episode ever, something that still rings as hilarity to me was when they prank called the producer of 'Funniest Home Videos'. It was all like "Yeah, this is your doctor....we got your results back.....and Im afraid you've only got 3 months to live!!!! *snigger* *snigger*

I have a book somewhere with episode listings, but I can't be bothered being that nerdy at the moment, maybe if there is popular demand...
It was an episode where Tim was pregnant and grew to the size of a small whale. There were headlines, "Is she having an entire football team?", and then of course he/she birthed Bill, facial hair an' all. Quite funny.

All this Martin / Molloy talk is making me wish I had more longer runs to listen to than just the final ever hour - I always felt the show's real strength was in the way it could slowly build up to stuff (which is why, much as I love the CD collections, they're no substitute for the real thing).
That said, I did always enjoy Mick going on about Sunset Boulevard. "Creepy boulevard..."

I kind of liked the daily formula the show would stick to, whereby straight after Pete Smith's intro it was:
Tony: aaaaand today....
and then after the first song:
Tony: You're listening to Martin/Molloy with myself Tony Martin, and this man here, a man that was today described as.... (etc).. Mick Molloy.
------
Can't remember whether it persisted through every single episode but I used to love the sign-off "And remember, if you can't say something intelligent, come talk to us"

That's the episode War Babies, which showed them meeting up for the first time as kids. And it wasn't Tim who was pregnant, but Bill's Mum, who gave birth to Bill as a fully-grown baby with facial hair.

hehe, why is it that all my memories of women on The Goodies have TIm Brooke-Taylor playing them? Something that never creeped me out as a child. Odd, when you really think about it. What's even more odd, is although I can remember watching this show from the age of 3 to 16 on a continuous loop, I have no idea when Tim crossed over from being 'funny' to 'hot'. It doesn't bear thinking about...
An abysmal write up for that episode in the book, The Goodies Rule OK. Didn't do justice to the fun of it at all. God, I'm fussy about my comedy books, aren't I? It was a bit of a let down how it didn't have an Aussie flavour to it. You know, just a paragraph or two capturing what it meant to us. Oh, well. Wrong forum.

That Goodies Rule OK book was pretty shonky, but that's Robert Ross for you. Nice pictures, though. And there's a proper Goodies book in the works being written by a proper researcher friend of mine. He's definitely taking on board the whole Aussie Goodies cult thing.
Anyway, Martin/Molloy competitions.... How could anyone forget Beat The Beazley? Or indeed Nude Moments.

I gather from this M/M reminiscence, that the show had a pretty well defined structure. Correct? I'm sure I read in some of that pre The Nation publicity about Mick needing to get away from 'all that', in ref. to Martin/Molloy. Was he talking about the format boxing him in? Did he grow bone tired of the terrible music? Or was he a 'bit over the wood grain' (hmm, obscure Simon Rogers joke that only three people might get) ie. sick of working with Tony?
I find Get This to have a more laid back structure, although I sometimes wish they'd kick Talkback Mountain to the kerb. But, in general, it seems to have more of an anything goes type feel, resulting in some wild fun. One wonders if Mick would have been more happy with this format? Or did he try all that on Tough Love anyway?

yeah Martin/Molloy was definitely very, very structured. In some ways it was good and I enjoyed the familiarity it brought while in other cases it got too structured. I definitely enjoy that it's more off the cuff on 'Get This'.
-------
So the list of comps that we have thus far is:
- Radio Gladiators
- Million Dollar Lunchbox
- Where's Barnsey?
- Moment of Truth
- Beat the Beazley
- Nude Moments (Im struggling to remember this....anyone?)
What was the name of the talent comp? You know, where people could call up and impress them with impressions and stuff. I got through for this and said the 50 US states and their capitals in 50 seconds. (lame I know but it's all I can do).

But Get This is pretty structured too - opening waffle (T Martin first break, Ed the second, not always but often), bit of not much / filler talk about podcasts around the middle then Talkback Mountian. Second hour, same as the first only there's a guest so almost no Richard Marsland and a lot less Ed. It's what they do within that structure that makes it feel more laid-back - Ed especially doesn't seem to be big on pre-recording skits, whereas on M/M Mick and Tone would both pre-record a fair bit of material.
I think Mick just wanted to be his own man and do his own show... again, after The Mick Molloy Show showed that letting Mick loose isn't the best thing in the world. He really needs someone to hold him in line, but I think that's probably the thing he personally would hate most.
Oh, and wasn't 'The Professionals' a M/M segment? Put in place mostly just to play the music from the TV show?

The structure is this...
Intro. "And today...." and "I'm Tony Martin and this bloke here the guy who slaughtered comedy on channel 9, Mick Molloy."
1st rant - either Tone or Mick
2nd rant - either Mick or Tone
Sketch
Odd bit before the competition where some other news would get discussed
Competition set up
Competition
Second hour
Intro. Announcing the guest.
Break one with guest.
Break two with guest.
Competition set up.
Competition.
Extra bit, most of it taken up with a replay of an old sketch.
Boz Scags (I don't know how to spell that) music with outro.
On Friday's there'd be the insinkerator where the crappiest jokes that didn't make it on to the show the rest of the week would get thrown "out there".
And on Friday's in the first rant they'd give away the Fumio. Anyone remember that? ;)
But yeah menagers, Mick's been used to the music since the D-Gen shows, he had it on Tough Love. It's always been a point of derision, and as one of the sketches I posted from the show illustrates, Tone and Mick would often take the piss as Tone does now on Get This about the music played.
So yeah, the show was very structured as you can see above. That was always the format, the only time there was deviation was if they couldn't get appropriate callers for the competitions, when they're throw to another song. Mick did a LOT of this on Tough Love and I think he was doing it to pad out the show to be honest. His tank was always pretty empty on that show sadly.
So yeah even though Martin/Molloy was extremely structured, and no doubt due to Tone, I doubt it was actually that that stopped Mick wanting to work with Tone, I'm pretty sure it was just that as he specifically said at the time of the Mick Molloy Show, that you're stuck in a studio with the same person for 4 years and that tends to make it so that you get on each others' nerves. Sadly, that was what Mick said back then, and there sadly seems to have been no real turning back. I mean he did Bag Eggs but it would have been rude if he didn't. And it was sad hearing that episode of Tough Love I upped because you really could hear that even though the two of them weren't in the studio together (Mick was calling in from the set of the film he was on) there still was the magic of their banter with each other. On Martin-Molloy they literally did finish each other's sentences, it's hard to imagine how you script for that or whether it is completely ad libbed.

Oh, and wasn't 'The Professionals' a M/M segment? Put in place mostly just to play the music from the TV show?
Are we talking chika chow?
I think the real comic genius is making it feel laid-back or ad libbed when a shitload of work really goes into every minute of the show. Just like Gary McDonald's character in The King was saying. Speaking of which, I would love to sneak a peek at Tony's "gag book" (oh, memories of how excellent Roz was in that role too). Husband noticed in an interview with Bruce McAvaney on the weekend, that his favourite pastime is sitting in his favourite chair cutting out articles and pasting them into scrapbooks. H, of course, poured much scorn, the likes of, "what a nerd, what, does he have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday volumes?". I believe I coughed loudly and then muttered "I think Tony Martin does the same thing".
It is understandable how Mick and Tone could have gotten on each other's nerves, particularily after such a massive work history even at the time. Maybe that's the advantage of having three people this time around, or four, counting the guest. I, too, lament less Richard in the 'loosen the tie' hour. I think more Richard less Ed, just quietly. He's so funny, yet he seems a tad ignored. Like Santo.

Couldn't agree more. As I've said before Richard is criminally under-used.
Ed can be hilarious though. I was in stitches the other week when he did his Kyle impression: "Call that 17? Doesn't look like 17 from where I sit."

Richard's great, he's really starting to get influenced by Tone into working hard at crafting his material. And Ed has his moments too. I really enjoyed his impression of an MTV presenter the other week.
Nude Moments was an M/M competition where people had to call up and say what they were doing in the nude. It was inspired by that Frankie J Holden show, which I think was also called Nude Moments.

But yeah, there are simply so many, and I used to be terrible at labelling them all. Unlike my Martin-Molloy tapes which I used to write out the labels for on the tapes and the cases meticulously. Although it took me about a year to realise Molloy wasn't spelt Malloy. It was funny because a little after I realised, Mick complained about it on air. And then there was that thing with Crackerjack being advertised as starring Mick Malloy that Tone comments about from that episode of Tough Love I upped. Some things can be regional. Like, in my day, we said "that's a bit rude" in the same way that PLPS say "that's a bit gay". We also called dickheads, "spooners", and this was not a statewide thing. So there you are.

I just thought of this today.
One of the many pieces of obscure music used on Martin Molloy was a song called Jesus put a yodel in my soul.
Part of this went:
"I'm yodellin' for Jesus, yodelodelodel-dee.."
This was by a country singer named Trevor Ginn. I know this because one of my friends from University has the tape on which this song can be found.
Ten years ago, a group of us were driving down Punt Road in Melbourne. My friend had the tape in his car. We put it in his stereo, began to play the tape, then turned up the volume as we wound the windows down.
We got a lot of strange looks from other drivers, but all of just laughed.
Can anybody else think of others?

Hi guys and girls. Wow just discovered this website and great reading about nostalgia about the old Martin Molloy days (pity about their breakup now).
Anyway I was wondering if anyone taped or has mp3 the early Martin Molloy shows in 1995 and if I could get a copy. Back in the days I taped with my dual cassette player sketches and talk from mid 1995 till their last show and have only recently converted them to mp3 so it's about 1.87 gigs worth of 64kbps quality audio! Also recently mp3d 149 entire Get This shows of 2006 minus ads and songs.
Happy to share the love with fans. Hopefully Tony Martin will be back on radio but I still listen to Richard Marsland on Pete and Myf and Ed on Wrong Way Home.
Favourite MM quote.. Tony Martin as little kid from Mick the instore Santa sketch..
"Santa let me go.. Help me.. mum!" as Mick sits on him and farts :)
Bye,
Vern
PS. I've put a few MM and Get This mp3s on my face book page Vernon Wong from Melbourne Australia.. just look it up

Verno, are you able to provide links to your M/M mp3s on this website? Maybe upload them to Sendspace or Media Fire or similar site?

Verno, it's me from facebook. Remember I asked you about what you had and I couldn't get that stupid mediafire application in facebook to work. I think you started taping about the same time I did, so I think I've got most things covered. There was only one sketch in that best-of you posted that I didn't have, so I figure it must be around about the same time. My name's Casey, remember?

Verno did I tell you I set my VCR to tape the shows and then cut the music/ads out? VCRs man, that's where the technology was back then!

I was thinking today about Tony's Milo and Otis sketch (that kid's film from 1990 about the adventures of a dog and cat, narrated by the late Dudley Moore).
In this, Milo and Otis did all sorts of unwholesome activities, such as train surfing and going to a rave party. Tony imitated Dudley Moore's narration, and sang a rendition of the Milo and Otis theme tune:
'Gonna take a walk outside today,
Gonna see what we can find today.'
This was hilarious stuff.
I recall too, Tony making many jokes about 'New Zealand's Anna Paquin' during the first year of Martin Molloy.
