Well most of you all saw it coming when they were shifted in timeslots a few weeks back but the boys announced today they have been given 6 weeks notice,im hopeing with Micallef also out of radio this will mean either a possibility of Shaun and Tony working together more on either radio,tv or movies.
I know i may be being a bit optimistic but hey ive got to try and find some positive out of this great show being axed, and while were on it why was it axed from what Tony said today MMMs ratings went up all over the board when the shows on...makes no sense? Also does anyone think Tony was serious when saying that Ed had already been approached by execs about how he thought hed relate to Peter Helliar,Helliar is ok but not in same league as Martin, anyway just thought if that is actually true then thats pretty poor form from MMM.

Austereo chief in tune with success
Date: October 13 2007

(exerpt)

Apart from customers, the big rivals for Harvie's attention at Austereo are its on-air presenters.

He readily reels off the likes of Kyle and Jackie O, Hamish and Andy, and Fifi and Marty with glowing endorsement of each, and makes a point of recruiting two other favourites — Matt Tilley and Tony Martin — to join his photo shoot for The Age.

Harvie is not shy about his affection for the presenters, believing media companies must ensure they have strong relationships with them — particularly when things are not going well.

"It's a fact of life that they often self-doubt, they realise they're walking a tightrope … if they get bad (ratings) surveys it can be quite devastating for them," he says.

"I speak to them all the time … but if you had to say when's the important time, it's after they've had a bad survey, and you've got to show them the company has belief in them and supports them."

Veteran Fox breakfast host Tilley, who has worked under Harvie for 17 years, said on-air staff appreciated that Harvie was "not someone who's constantly going 'budgets, budgets, budgets, we can't do this, we can't do that' ".

"Jul 25, 2006 (Herald Sun - ABIX via COMTEX) -- In order to secure Tony Martin as a host, Triple M had to promise him dangerously free rein. Martin rose to extreme popularity on Triple M's "Martin and Molloy" show, and now hosts "Get This" on the Australian commercial radio station. Triple M had to fulfil Martin's desires regarding wages, production time, and daily guest hosts."

Maybe it was the wages? Do we know how much he asked for?

Comment from some forum from around about the time they dumped Mick for '07...

"The same goes with the dumping of Mick Molloy and Tough Love. They can pay Tony Martin less as he isn't as well know but is getting almost identicle ratings. Triple M are trying to save the back pocket but long term it will cost them. Triple M do this cyclicly...look what happened after they dumped Doug Mulray, rating went to shit."

I doubt it'd be over money... unless they were going to ask for more? Tony was always going on about how they put on the extra year in 2007 for free. Giving Tony a free hand no doubt rankled some, and perhaps they finally got the ear of someone who counts?

We don't know the full story but I'm inclined to believe it wasn't about wages or production costs at all, just internal politics. Tony was right to stick to his guns and ensure that everything went his way, as that's what made the show great. Triple M will regret this decision, for sure!!
