Tony Martin on ABC 702 last night!

Post by BeerStud2 » Thu Oct 13, 2005 10:54 am

Anyone hear this interview? (with James O'Loghlin)
It was fantastically awesome!! Tony spoke about everything from his Martin/Molloy days to Late Show, to his motivation for writing, and his family life. Excellent, excellent interview!

I learnt the following things (amongst others):

> He was approached to do Bargearse commercials for a beer company but refused on account of not wanting to ruin the 'legacy'

> He was approached to do Tum and Phul radio commercials in NZ (refused for the same reason as above)

> Working on Martin/Molloy would start each morning at 9:30am, and they'd finish about 1:30am. This rigerous work schedule combined with his blood problem (discussed in the book I believe? Im getting it today - payday!) really took its toll on him

That is a lot of downtime for two hours of Radio per weekday.

But, they were getting paid $900,000 a year each. Well deserved, definitely.

If only Mick put the same effort into TL...

I actually emailed them to try to find out if they are going to put any audio up but haven't got a response yet. There's a podcast for the Safran appearance but can't find anything for this one so far...

I'm not sure if they could with a one-hour timeslot.

I put up some feedback on the 702 guestbook about the interview, saying how great I thought it was and some dude wrote back saying "He's not that great. He was 'performing' using 'material'"

And I wrote back saying "Gee thanks for the insights man.."

That sure showed him...... :?

This is Tony's problem I think, he too often performs using 'material'. About time he did what most current radio comedy teams do and get rid of the material and start talking about what kind of underwear he gets about in. Having actual material is so 1998 etc etc etc.

Oceanthroats is right - who wants to hear a comedian doing material he's taken time and effort to work out, when you could have some zany nutbag ranting on about their jocks from off the top of their head? After all, the best comedy always comes from taking no time or effort but just spouting rapid-fire wacky crap - check out The Shebang if you don't believe me. And The Cage. And The Penis Zoo. And the Spaz-Attack. And my mates down the pub.

(where's the sarcasm font on this keyboard?)
