More than likely. I don't think the ABC gives an arse about it's history. Which given that Spicks and Specks is such a ratings juggernaut, shows grave stupidity. Wasn't it a Get This tale that told of Molly backing his car up to Elsternwick studios and filling the boot with tapes, when he heard that the ABC was about to tape over them?

The BBC were just as bad. They wiped most of their music shows because they were aimed at a youth market and deemed culturally unfit for preservation. There's only a few complete "Top Of The Pops" programs from the sixties still around. That's why when you see footage of British 60s bands, it's more than likely from German TV's "Beat Club". They also wiped most of their mid-60s Doctor Who, Dad's Army, and other classic shows.

I also heard that the pilot episode of "Love Thy Neighbour" was similarly lost in these purges. Vale Eddie Booth!

To think, we were this close to losing Monty Python's Flying Circus as well, because of the BBC's policy of wiping 'light entertainment'.

I can't imagine a world where the only surviving Python is series 4... The horror.... The horror...

I saw an amazing demo last year by some TV restoration people who'd managed to extract colour images from black and white dubs of colour TV shows. These black and white dubs were sold by the BBC to places like Australia which hadn't switched to colour, and by using this process they've been able to restore lost footage. So, if you happen to work in TV and come across any such material get in touch with Dicky Fiddy of the British Film Institute who runs Missing Believed Wiped - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_Believed_Wiped
I just want to pop him on a bit of toast and eat him right up.

There's a new Doctor Who DVD coming out from Jon Pertwee's era (Planet Of The Daleks) that was originally in colour but has an episode that only exists in black & white. Apparently one of the nerds found a way of decoding colour signals from the b&w film and has combined that with a recolourisation of the episode to restore the episode to it's original form.

Here's a link:

Expect other 70s shows to get the same treatment.

It is! I've seen it often on the credits. My best credits name so far is 'L Brock Winkless the third'. The logic of which must be 'Hell, son I had to put up with it & so can you!'
