S01E01/02/03/04/05 Clips 4K Experiment

Post by switchopens »

Just thought I'd see how the restored clips turn out in 4K.

Some of the results are a little odd, I'm not too sure I'm happy with them but this seems to be the best I can manage right now. I might need some more time to work out the bugs.

Also, try to watch these on a flat screen. If you have a curved monitor or TV, these might look weird.

Sorry to be negative again like with the colour correction, but again I don't think there's much point in trying to make 4K video out of a 240 line VHS tape. Unfortunately the only times where upscaling can really make a difference is where you are upscaling video that was originally at a higher resolution and then downscaled (i.e. films downscaled to 576p from 1080p masters for release on DVD.) Despite there being a lot of marketing hype around upscaling software, it's just not possible to generate details that weren't there in the first place. You can sharpen blurry video (and get amazing results https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/399 ... ost2603010), but the video on the late show DVDs is quite sharp anyway. Probably best to focus your efforts on areas of the video and audio where you can make a difference, like you amazing work with the deghosting and the removal of tape hiss.

I think you're right. All the results just turn out weird.

I just wanted to get a second opinion, and also to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.

And yeah, I think focusing on other issues is probably a better idea, so this will probably be the first and last 4K experiment (though I may have another crack at it sometime in the future).

"Well, looks that sub-plot has come to a bit of a dead end, so let's tuck straight into the main course which is goats testicles deep fried in rats flab."
