S01E06 News Remastered (last of this batch)

Post by switchopens »

It's a long one!

A full 6 minutes of The Late Show News (S01E06) for your enjoyment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SxM7apiIjM

I'm actually not 100% finished with this clip as there's a little bit of a contrast issue I'm still trying to work out, but I didn't want to make anyone wait any longer. As soon as I figure it out, I'll update the video on Youtube.

No comparison clip this time, as the original video was in reasonable condition to begin with so there isn't much to show you (apart from the contrast issue plus some pixel blocking). Most of the remastering was of the audio, so just imagine a lot of annoying hiss in the background and you'll get the idea.

This is actually the last remastered clip in this batch, so you probably won't hear much from me for the next 3-4 weeks whilst I'm working on the new lot. Expect a remastered clip from S01E07 and S01E08 around late May (plus more to follow).

Enjoy, Muckrakers!

For the contrast, I was surprised to discover that you can fix it up pretty easily and get decent enough results by increasing the gamma using any old video editor.

Edit: I think it's also an option in TMPGEnc.

Adjusting the contrast is the easy bit.

The problem is some of the source videos are REALLY dark and REALLY small, and when the contrast/gamma is pushed up to what I would consider the "correct" brightness, it produces HEEEEEEEAPS of artefact blocking. I mean, OODLES of it.

There's only so much that the filters can compensate for, so I have to fine-tune the settings until they're absolutely perfect, BUT I can't see the results until the rendering is finished. Additionally, sometimes I have to run the clips through several times in different programs.

Basically what I do is 3 different renders on the original clip, 3 renders in the next program of THOSE clips, and depending on the results, do a 3rd or even 4th render of THOSE clips; and that's just so I can see which one is closest to the results I want.

I often end up with 27 or 81 versions of the same clip and even then none of those will be perfect, but I will have an idea of which combination is best.

I'm working on a clip from episode 7 right now which is absolutely terrible quality, so I have 243 versions of a 2 minute clip and I'll need to check every single one for the best results.

Mind you, all of the versions mentioned above are better than the original; but I don't want it to be BETTER, I want it to be GOOD.

Oh yeah just noticed that. It looked fine in the small preview panel but when I rendered myself a copy after posting that comment noticed the macroblocking

Also great work with the video. The video is heaps brighter with relatively little blocking anywhere so good job

Thank you! =)

Which program are you using? If it's a program I'm not already using, maybe I can incorporate it into my workflow.

I have to say that I'm super happy right now, as I got to meet Judith Lucy yesterday! - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kIy8YS ... sp=sharing

She was speaking at the Sydney Writers Festival, and I now have a signed copy of her latest book so I'm seriously stoked right now.

I mentioned to her that I'd been a fan since The Late Show and that unfortunately I couldn't track down a copy of "Sexy Girls with Sexy Guns" for her to sign, to which she replied "Oh my god" and put her head in her hand for a moment, smiled, and then said "well, I guess that's a loss for this nation!".

I was a bit star-struck at the time so it probably wasn't the best joke to attempt (my cerebrum decided to take over without consulting the rest of my brain) but she flashed me a very disarming smile and clearly got the joke (bad as it was), so she saved me from feeling very awkward.

I walked away with a big smile, a signed book, a selfie, and my brain has been dumping gallons of dopamine into my system ever since.

She is amazing.

I was just using a random video editor, kdenlive. Sounds great about getting to meet Judith Lucy! Always thought her and tony martin were the funniest out of the already hilarious late show crew. She also does fantastic stand-up and I'm enjoying her podcast as well. Really need to head down to the book shop and get Turns out I'm Fine too.

UPDATE :

Unfortunately it looks like I'm going to have to release the clips from E07 and E08 a bit later than planned.

I was hoping I'd have them finished by this weekend since I'm heading off to the NT next Tuesday for a couple of weeks, but it doesn't look like that's going to be the case anymore as there's so much work left to do. I'd say the clips probably won't be ready until early June.

I thought E01-E05 were in pretty bad shape, but E07 and E08 are on another level and are such poor quality that I've had to start from scratch and completely rethink my workflow just for these two episodes. Even the audio needs to be done differently, since all of my usual methods keep generating a terrible twinkling sound.

Additionally, there's a few seconds in E08 where someone must have had their mobile phone near their TV at the time they were recording, and you can clearly hear the "di-di-DIT-di-di-DIT-di-di-DIT" sound. I'm trying my best, but I don't think there's going to be any way to remove it.

I've got some ideas and advice on how to fix the problems (hopefully they work), but I simply won't have the time to tackle these issues until after I get back.

My apologies for the delay.

Yeah just a different kind of problem for episodes 6-15 of season 1. It isn't easy to fix ghosting but it must be even more difficult to fix the contrast issues that plague those episodes. Luckily season 1 episodes 16-20 and series 2 are basically perfect, probably because a lot more people taped it meaning that BenG probably had more sources to choose from when he made the DVDs.
