HYBPA Episode 1 Recap

The "Super Challenge" with a budget.

The “Super Challenge” with a budget.

The somewhat quietly promoted Have You Been Paying Attention? made its debut on Sunday at 7pm on Channel 10, with host Tom Gleisner looking comfortable and ready for business.

A simple yet colourful studio setup with five contestants: 1/3 of Santo Sam & Ed Ed KavaleeJane Kennedy, radio personalities Troy Kinne and Rachel Corbett, and the other 1/3 of Santo Sam & Ed Sam Pang.

The quiz itself covered local and international news, sports and other events. With sharp and quick-witted answers for a quick laugh and amusement, it’s a gag-a-second entertainment. Fans of Working Dog and Santo, Sam & Ed would already know how the chemistry of Kavalee, Pang and Gleisner work together. (See their podcast for more). Kennedy takes the friendly and more mature approach, echoing her famous appearance on Sale Of The Century  20 years ago (sorry, making you feel old).

With four rounds crammed into a 22 minute block, each right (or close to right) answer was rewarded points. However, at the end of the show, the points don’t really matter, other than to win a perspex trophy which was probably a melted down and recycled Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation trophy. Most of the questions asked by Gleisner were supported by images or video footage.

Kinne and Corbett blended in perfectly, with a few pop culture references thrown in. When it came to the third round “News Maker” segment, where each contestant has a special topic that’s known to them, some secrets come out – Corbett knowing a little too much about UK pop boy group One Direction. Even Kennedy knows so much about reality TV stars The Kardashians, it’s frightfully disturbing. But we forgive.

Round four consisted on a ‘fast money’ round, where it was Quick-Draw McGraw for all 5, but Kavalee and Corbett came out on top.

If you are unfamiliar with the background and style of humour that Working Dog present, then you have a lot to catch up on. It’s not a TAYG / Sale Of The Century / Good News Week / Spicks & Specks / Tractor Monkeys / panel type show. It’s purely for fun and a great giggle to wind down your weekend. As long as they keep the vibrant personalities coming in (apparently Kavalee and Pang will be regulars) and keep it sharp and quick, it’ll be one of the most entertaining game shows around.

And for the hardcore fan like yourself – there was no Papadums, Tonga, King Wally Lewis, Menagers, Burl-esk jokes. But it doesn’t hurt to tweet or yell them out at home. You know you did one of them.

Have You Been Paying Attention? 7pm Sundays Channel 10. Encore screening 10:30pm later that night.

Saturday Night Is The Loneliest Night

Milking the anniversary one more time, today 20 years ago marked the final ever episode of The Late Show, After a two year, 40 episode run, The D-Generation team called it quits.

And how else could they wrap up the show? With Mick Molloy finally getting the Season 2 Musical Closer/finale correctly by getting “The Lanky Yankee” Don Lane singing ‘Saturday Night Is The Loneliest Night’. This is then followed with Don hi-jacking a studio camera a la The Don Lane Show closer.

Saturday night has never been the same again.

Meanwhile, we’re currently in process of writing up episode reviews/guide here. Check back often for updates and extra video content.

The crazy guys at Santo, Sam & Ed HQ are returning!

Since wrapping up Santo, Sam & Ed’s Sports Fever! on 7Mate early April 2012, the guys kept the bond going via the Santo, Sam & Ed Podcast (which we unofficially dubbed Pod Fever!.. you know, to keep it consistent). After 25 entertaining episodes, the cast disappeared while other projects were worked on. But fans demanded more.

Santo CilauroSam Pang and Ed Kavalee will grace our LED/LCDs again through the magic of Fox Sports for Santo, Sam & Ed’s Total Football.

Starting Monday October 14 on Fox Sports One, the guys will be taking their own point of view on the A-League coverage. Commentary, jokes, and according to a Twitter conversation – Bin Night may return.

Now I know not everyone has access to Foxtel, so here’s a quick guide on how to achieve legal access to it.

Please note: We have no association with Foxtel whatsoever. This information supplied is “at the time” basis. The plans and prices change consistently, and access to Foxtel may not be available in your area – so please take your time and research before signing up to anything and make sure it is in your budget.

  • If you do not have Foxtel, check out their various plans/rates/contracts at foxtel.com.au
  • If you already have Foxtel, check your account package to see if you have access to the Sports pack. Usual standard Foxtel access is the Essentials package as default, so it may cost you an extra $ a month to get the package added on.
  • If you want Foxtel but do not want a long term contract, there’s currently a limited time offer of a “No Contract” access with cable/satellite and set top box. Fox Sports One is under the Sports pack.
  • If you want Foxtel but no contract and no set top box but you have a kick-arse internet connection and awesome download limit, Foxtel Play is your best bet. This streams Foxtel on your XBOX 360, PC, MAC and/or Samsung Smart TV with a software installation. You can build your package. Fox Sports One is under the Sports pack.
  • Find a friend who has access and get to know them a little better every Monday 🙂

The fine folk at Working Dog have been busy people of late.

While in 2013 had their previous television innings of Santo, Sam and Ed’s Sports Fever! and repeats of The Hollowmen and Audrey’s Kitchen, the announcement of a new political satire has come to fruition.

The Sydney Morning Herald’s Michael Idato reports of an eight part comedy series Utopia – which dives in head first into the world of ‘property developments, desalination plants’ and everything in between. It sounds very much like The Hollowmen but centralised to local state areas instead of the larger federal government.

Utopia is set to air in 2014. Click the above link article for more details.

90s hair seemed like a good idea at the time…

Wow, talk about a blast from the past. Does anyone remember this 1993 video clip of John Farnham’s Seemed Like A Good Idea (At The Time), featuring the Late Show cast & nonno Cilauro? (Thanks for the link, Zoë!)
