No bonus episode is complete without a special guest appearance, and this one is no exception. Author, Media Personality, and D-Gen nerd Tony “Good one, Wilson!” Wilson joins the fun. With his witty banter and insightful commentary, Tony adds an extra layer of humour and nostalgia to the episode, such as how he became friends with the cast of the D-Gen, how he nearly became the third chair on Santo, Sam & Ed, and his contribution to Tony Martin‘s SIZZLETOWN.

Hard Quiz Goes The Late Show

In a delightful crossover moment on ABC TV’s popular game show Hard Quiz, fans were treated to a surprising twist when The Late Show became the expert topic in a recent broadcast.

Coight Does Mitsubishi

If you’ve been watching Have You Been Paying Attention? on a religious basis, you would have noticed various sponsorships throughout the broadcast run, with the most recent being car manufacturer Mitsubishi.

What a better way to promote their off-road hybrid vehicles than Mr All-Aussie Adventure himself, Russell Coight.

In a collection of TV commercials, Coight does his signature spool on outback adventures with his ‘trusty’ fuel powered 4×4, thinking a particular latte-sipping city-slicker couple with their hybrid won’t survive a day in his neck of the woods.

The entire Russell Coight All Aussie Adventure series is available on DVD and digital.

Boris Conley: “Maybe Elliot would be on TikTok during the lockdown”

To celebrate the 50th episode of theChampagne Comedy Podcast, ChampagneComedy.com caught up with Frontline‘s “Friday Night Funnyman” Elliot Rhodes, or known privately as Boris Conley.

Boris, a former waiter and performer, shared intriguing details about his time on the popular TV show Frontline and his musical career. From his impromptu piano performances to touring as part of a tribute act, Boris’s journey offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of entertainment.

Boris reminisced about his early days as a waiter, where he would entertain customers by showcasing his showmanship on the piano during slow business hours. His talent and flair for performance were evident, and he admitted to being a bit of a show-off.

During the interview, Boris also discussed his role on Frontline where portrayed the character Elliot Rhodes – an individual with unwavering enthusiasm and self-belief. Despite being oblivious to the attempts of host Mike Moore (Rob Sitch) to remove him, Elliot eventually faces the harsh reality of his situation .

Boris shared that most of his scenes on Frontline were shot in just two days, and he often completed his performances in less than 10 minutes. The contrasting production quality and vibrant colors in Elliot’s scenes, achieved through different filming techniques and transfers, further emphasized the character’s larger-than-life personality.  Boris also provided insights into the filming locations of Frontline. The first series was shot at Ripponlea in the old ABC studios in Melbourne, while the Elliot scenes were filmed in the same studios used for news and current affairs. This unique setting and filming approach contributed to the distinct visual style and production quality of the show.

The conversation then shifted to speculate on what Elliot might be doing now, with a range of possibilities – Elliot could be performing his own cabaret shows, appearing on TV programs like Sky News Australia or the ABC, or even creating satirical content on platforms like TikTok. Regardless of the specific path, it was clear that Elliot’s undying spirit and determination would continue to fuel his artistic endeavours.

Boris’s interview offered an exciting peek behind the curtain of his career as both a performer and a part of the acclaimed series. As we look to the future, it’s clear that Elliot’s spirit lives on, leaving us with a sense of wonder and anticipation for his next artistic endeavors.

Thank God You’re Here returns for 2023

It’s something in the Working Dog-iverse (we made that up) that the team tends to not revisit their projects after they’ve moved on. But that theory was destroyed when Russell Coight’s All Aussie Adventures returned for a third season in 2018 after a many-a-year hiatus. Now, after a 14 year break, the theatresports themed Thank God You’re Here is returning to our TV sets in 2023 for a new season.

Originally presented by Shane Bourne and judged by Tom Gleisner, the basis of the show presented four personalities from various forms of entertainment, dressing them up in a particular costume and showing them the blue door to enter a random scenario, acting out and responding to the characters around them with hilarious results.

Seasons One to Three were screened on Channel 10 between 2006 to 2007, until Channel 7 brought the blue door over for a Season Four in 2009. Now, Channel 10 have brought the blue door back home for Season Five.

Not much is known at the moment if Gleisner is returning as Judge, but Have You Been Paying Attention? regular and Utopia cast member Celia Pacquola will be taking hosting duties of the show.

The show was so successful, that it has been sold overseas and adapted in various countries. You can follow the official social media accounts for updates – as well as a launch date. You can register to be an audience member here.

Working Dog starts posting more YouTube videos

If you’re still reminiscing about classic Late Show clips then you’re in for a treat! In recent weeks and months, Working Dog Productions has started posting a lot of Late Show videos on its YouTube channel either to coincide with current events (such as Red Hot Chili Peppers touring), or just to have a laugh. You’ll also find clips from other WD productions, such as Utopia, Have You Been Paying Attention, The Castle and of course, Frontline.

The video quality’s generally great too (but it looks like Rob’s Dick Smith impression in the following compilation could have been lifted directly from my crackly VHS recording!).

What to expect in 2023

Hello and welcome to 2023 (If you’re reading this long after, welcome to what possibly happened in 2023)!

Here’s what we know that’s happening in the ‘Champagne Comediverse‘. Obviously, everything is subject to change.

In no particular order:

Utopia

Tony (Rob Sitch) and the team at the Nation Building Authority are returning for a fifth season of the highly successful and multi award winning comedy series that pokes fun* at government departments.

Utopia Season 5 will return on the ABC later in 2023.

* Viewers who work in government departments claim it’s a documentary.

Have You Been Paying Attention?

Quizmaster Tom Gleisner, notable players Ed Kavalee and Sam Pang and a rotating roster of players are coming back for an eleventh season to test their knowledge on the week’s events. The multi award winning quiz show has no set schedule as yet, but it’ll most likely be returning around May on Monday nights 8:30 / 8:40pm on Channel 10.

The Cheap Seats

The wrap-up of weekly events with sharp punchlines and goofiness is returning for a third season. Hosts Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald will be ready to deliver the topical news and headlines to you, alongside special guests joining them on the desk. The Logie nominated panel show does not have a schedule yet, but will most likely return around April on Tuesday nights 8:30 / 8:40pm on Channel 10.

Mick Molloy is returning for more rounds alongside Sam Pang and Andy Maher to talk more footy, sport, beer and more footy. 37 episodes are being lined up, and the Logie nominated sports panel show will be returning Wednesday February 1st. Check the TV schedule when it gets closer.

Tony Martin’s SIZZLETOWN

After a financial stamp of approval from Roundabout Accountants, Tony Martin will be bringing back his late night call-in podcast with the assistance of Matty Dower on the ‘potsnpans’ to give more laughs, conspiracy theories, and hopefully more song surprises with the award-winning SIZZLETOWN podcast.

Sports Bizarre

Mick Molloy and Titus O’Reily surprised us all with this podcast in 2022, talking about various histories and stories of sports and sporting events that seem too good to be true.  Sports Bizarre will return sometime in 2023, so subscribe via your favourite podcast provider so you’ll be the first to know when the newest episode drops.

Bloom

Tom Gleisner is taking to the theatre stage again (see 2014’s The Speechmaker) with BLOOM at the Arts Centre Melbourne Playhouse.

To quote:

Bloom is a funny, big-hearted new musical that celebrates the power of music to connect us across generations, starring comedian Anne Edmonds alongside Frankie J. Holden and Vidya Makan.

Mick Molloy for Triple M Sydney Breakfast 

After taking a radio sabbatical in 2022, Mick Molloy is again returning to Triple M, but this time back in breakfast, and in Sydney. Molloy is teaming up with Mark “MG” Geyer to talk all things sport and comedy on Triple M Sydney, beginning early 2023. You’ll be able to listen in on 104.9FM if you’re in Sydney, listen online via the LISTNR app, or the podcast when it becomes available.

Judith Lucy quits stand-up

After doing the comedy circuit for over 30 years, Judith Lucy has pulled up stumps on the stand-up gig routine. But, Judith will still be doing other activities. There’s books, podcasts, “In conversation” pieces, TV appearances. Judith is active on Facebook, so you can follow her updates on her official page.

Sitch, Martin, “Panel”, Molloy are Effluent

If you missed the Kath & Kim specials on Channel 7 recently – you know – celebrating 20 years since Australia’s favourite suburban Mum and Daughter team (D-Gen grad Jane Turner and Gina Riley) first graced our cathode ray tubes – there were quick throwbacks and connections to the D-Generation / Working Dog team.

Late Show memories!

To celebrate 30 years since The Late Show a number of former Late Show cast members have been doing the rounds on TV, print and radio. Here’s a quick round-up!

On Thursday 21 July,  Jane Kennedy chatted to Sammy J on ABC Radio Melbourne Breakfast. “When the show went to air at the time, the critics at the major newspapers were so harsh about it,” she recalls (as Sammy J interjects with a “WARNEKE!”). “They actually went as far to say, ‘Do not watch this show.’ … That was a red rag to a bull for us.”

And on Friday 22 July, Rob Sitch chatted to WSFM presenters Jonesy & Amanda on JAM Nation. “This was the show that was instrumental to how Australians of our generation saw comedy,” Amanda says, reeling off some classic sketches.

Rob says of the show’s popularity, “Here’s the advantage we had back then: teenagers on a Saturday night were trapped at home, so we had an audience of hostages really… it was before social media so we really didn’t know who was watching, it was either 70 year old ABC viewers who wanted a BBC drama back on or 14, 15, 16 year olds, and eventually the feedback came back from them and that was the delight.”

Another highlight of the week was The Australian’s article by Troy Bramston commemorating The Late Show, featuring interviews with Santo Cilauro and Tony Martin.

“The Late Show was something you recorded
on your home video cassette recorder and played again and again mick molloy illuwith friends. If you missed it, and didn’t set your VCR timer to record it, you sought a friend who did. The sketches were retold on the school bus, around the office water cooler and at parties.”

Check out the cover of Mick in Shitscared! Says Santo in the interview: “We were young enough to be stupid and followed our instincts, sometimes against the better judgement of people who were more mature than us, and that was important.”

Also, Jane appeared on Studio 10 reminiscing about The Late Show (the caption incorrectly says 1982, but we aren’t that old!) “We had an hour of comedy to fill each week … writing things five minutes before we went to air… it was very much a flying by the seat of your pants style about it as well which made it pretty different.”

But the best appearance this week has got to be Tony Martin on Mad as Hell (right after Shaun Micallef channels It’s Academic on Brain Eisteddfod), who reprises his uncanny Woody Allen impression with a bit of Arnie thrown in, just for us fans!
